Rachel and Stephen
Rachel and Stephen 220x300Rachel Brown and Stephen Smart have served as Board Members here at YMCA Doncaster since 2012.

Rachel has always had a passion for working with children with additional needs. She states that she knew what she wanted to do from a young age and her first job, following her studies, was as a Classroom Assistant at a Deaf School. She has worked with children ever since. She now works as a Nursery Nurse at the local hospital supporting children who have additional needs and their families. This is a role she has been in for over twenty five years and is very modest about the work she does.

Stephen studied Quantity Surveying, winning an award from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors for the Top Student due to his high standard of work in his last year of studies. Following this, he secured a position in his chosen field. His work ethic and great reputation, built up over twenty years, opened up an opportunity for him to become a freelance Quantity Surveyor which he enjoys immensely.

As well as working full time, both Rachel and Stephen have volunteered at other associations such as The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust at Potteric Carr and Nottingham Wildlife Trust respectively. Rachel helped with the school visits and activities; Stephen helped with Administration.

Rachel and Stephen have both been involved with the YMCA for over ten years, having been members of the association and keen Table Tennis players.

They feel that their involvement with the Board of Governors is quite unique, as they are partners who were invited on to the Board:

Stephen explained “It’s nice to come in to the Board with a partnership perspective. We want to show that there really is an opportunity for others and their partners to get involved.”

Rachel agreed stating “We both bring different skills and understanding than each other to the Board; I have more experience of working with Vulnerable Adults, where as Stephen has more of an understanding of the financial side of things.”

In their spare time, when they are not volunteering elsewhere, Rachel and Stephen are keen walkers; mostly walking locally but their favourite places to walk are The Lake District, Devon and Austria.

Rachel and Stephen really do come across as a very modest couple. They do not see their involvement with the YMCA or indeed the other charities and associations they volunteer with as a way of gaining personal rewards. They offer their time and support because they truly do feel they can make a difference.
