Joanne writes about volunteering. This post is part of a series of thought-pieces loosely inspired by the music of our youth.
Imagine making a difference.
Homelessness has become a growing problem in Doncaster and it is an issue that many people don’t know how to deal with.
Nobody wants to walk past a young person in need on the street; people want to help but they are unsure how.
By offering a few hours each week to volunteer in our charity shop, you would make that difference. You would be supporting one of Doncaster’s oldest charities as we try to rid our town of youth homelessness.
Imagine meeting new people.
Volunteering in our charity shop could be a great move for you as well as for the young people we support.
If you are shy, you might find that extra confidence to mix with others. Maybe you have recently retired and found yourself with extra time on your hands.
As a volunteer, you will meet new people each day. Many of our customers return week after week to browse through the bargains and stop for a chat.
It won’t be long before you have an increased confidence to deal with customer queries, and your shyness will be a thing of the past.
Imagine learning new skills.
Volunteering for YMCA Doncaster will give you a chance to become part of a team.
If you’re job hunting, volunteering can be a great addition to your CV. It not only shows a prospective employer that you have a set of skills, it shows that you have the drive to show up regularly and work in a varied team.
If you have never worked in a customer facing role, don’t worry; we have a full training programme for all our volunteers, and with each day your customer service skills will improve.
You will learn about visual merchandising and how this affects the sales. You may also be given responsibility for your own area of the shop.
Imagine the satisfaction.
Feel the satisfaction of knowing you have done all you can for your customers.
Feel happy knowing that your new skills are starting to shine.
Feel proud of your achievements as a volunteer, knowing you have helped the young people of our town.
Imagine a country free of homelessness.
Every penny raised in our shop goes towards our work with young people in Doncaster.
By offering your time and your support, you are directly influencing that work.
