I get a great deal of satisfaction in providing a safe, welcoming home for vulnerable young adults in Doncaster.

Andy is our Operations Manager and began working for YMCA Doncaster in July 2017.

There are two sides to Andy’s role: financial and operational. He keeps the books and handles payroll among other fiscal tasks, while also being responsible for YMCA Doncaster’s buildings, health and safety, and client support.

“Some people might find the numbers side of things dry, but I love it,” Andy told us. “Along with my small team, I get a great deal of satisfaction in providing a safe, welcoming home for vulnerable young adults in Doncaster. Contributing to all the things that happen in the background to make that possible is intensely rewarding. And I don’t just keep everything up to standard, I like to improve where I can – like installing microwaves in the rooms and LED lights,” he gave a few recent examples.

Andy acquired his skills by running his own companies in the hospitality industry for ten years. But he decided to come on board after an old school friend, Matthew, who had dedicated his life to helping young people in Birmingham, died: “Although I had enjoyed nearly 20 years working in hospitality, Matthew’s work seemed much more worthy. So, the combination of this role appearing in my Twitter timeline and the thoughts his death had triggered lead me to apply.”

Unsurprisingly, the pandemic presented a particular challenge for Andy being in charge of health and safety, but he did an excellent job keeping everyone safe and getting everyone on board with the necessary changes.

Other things you should know about our Operations Manager extraordinaire: he has a tenpin bowling instructor qualification (that he’s never used!), he lived in Singapore until he was eight, he’s a Southampton FC fan, he has an affectionate pug called Winston and he came third in the Independent’s ‘Top Twitter Jokes’ in 2017!
