It’s so rewarding to know that you were able to help that person and then seeing them progress and do well is the best!
Rachel has worked for YMCA Doncaster since August 2018.
Born and raised in Doncaster, Rachel spent her early years learning how to ice skate, “I had figure skating lessons when I was younger, so I can ice skate pretty well. I still have my own ice skates.”
Rachel’s first job was as a casual bar staff member at the racecourse. “It was quite a high pressured working environment, especially during the annual St Leger festival. It taught me to work fast whilst maintaining accuracy and a smile!”
Following the summer working at the racecourse, Rachel attended Leeds Metropolitan University where she secured a degree in Childhood Studies “I don’t find writing at length the easiest thing to do, so a ten thousand word dissertation was a big challenge for me.”
Rachel loves technology and gadgets. She is a great believer in computer literacy and advocates for better education for children and adults in computing. “I think it’s important, in this technological age, that everyone should be able to stay safe online and have the ability to access what they need as more and more things become digital.”
Alongside her love of gadgets, Rachel is a lighting and media technician for her church. In her spare time she can be found preparing media and programming light scenes for church events.
Before coming to join the team at YMCA Doncaster, Rachel worked in car insurance and enjoyed the customer service side of things. However, she found the hard sell difficult. After 4 years Rachel decided it was time to look for a job where she could help people in a more meaningful way. She states that she stumbled across the advert for a position at YMCA Doncaster and decided it could be the job for her.
Rachel hasn’t looked back since:
“I love to be there for people when they need someone to help them through a tough time. It’s so rewarding to know that you were able to help that person and then seeing them progress and do well is the best!
