Amy writes about the benefits of taking part in activities . This post is a part of a series of thought-pieces loosely inspired by the music of our youth.
After the past few years of frequent changes to our social calendars, it’s understandable that so many people are struggling to get back into the routine of going out and mingling with others again. Outings can seem expensive and don’t take priority. Here at YMCA Doncaster, we encourage young people to join activities and try something new. That is why we have a multitude of free activity sessions for young people aged 5 to 30.
The list of benefits of young people socialising with others is never ending and includes increase in happiness, learning to cooperate, development of leadership skills, increase in confidence and better mental health. During more physical activities, young people are more active and are therefore improving their fitness and general health. In more creative activities benefits include being able to express your thoughts, feelings and emotions clearer and reduce feelings of anxiety and stress.
At YMCA Doncaster, our free activities frequently change but always contain aspects of physical activity and/or creativity. During art and craft activities young people are encouraged to get in touch with their creative sides and zone into their work. Some more physical activities at the YMCA Doncaster include our array of performing arts sessions. These physical activities help release endorphins which help us feel happier and put us in a positive state of mind.
All of our activities take place in YMCA Doncaster Community Centre which has an array of rooms purpose built for activities such as a games room, table tennis room and large classroom settings perfect for crafts. There is also a large lounge where parents/guardians are welcome to wait for their young people and fit in their daily dose of socialisation. Alternatively, they can have some time to themselves and bring a book etc and take advantage of the quiet environment.
An important thing to remember is that everyone is different. We all work at different paces and feel different emotions. It can be daunting to join a new activity where you don’t know anyone. However, YMCA Doncaster is a safe space with friendly staff and clients so it would be the perfect place to start. If the thought of booking on for the full term seems intimidating then there is an option to book a trial session to test out the activity before you commit.
