Zoe writes about volunteering. This post is part of a series of thought-pieces loosely inspired by the music of our youth.
The word need can be defined as “requiring something because it is essential or very important rather than just desirable”. Whilst the word need is a word I use as part of my day-to-day vocabulary, I often use it wrongly.
I will often say “I need a bar of chocolate” or “I need a takeaway” after a busy day. But when I really sit and think about the word need, I remember that I am fortunate enough to be able to have a bar of chocolate or a takeaway without really needing it.
Sadly, there are many young people out there in Doncaster who do need much more than just a chocolate bar – they need a home.
YMCA Doncaster is an independent charity and we are trying to provide the essentials for these vulnerable young people who find themselves homeless. The biggest way we do this is through our Supported Accommodation – this provides a home for 30 young people.
Not only do our young people have a roof over their heads, we have a 24/7 team that provide one to one sessions with clients to help them with a wide range of struggles.
Ultimately, we help them to move into a safe home that they can call their own.
We are small team of around 20 people, all carrying out different roles to directly contribute to improving the lives of these young people. They need us, and we need you.
Here at YMCA Doncaster we are always looking for volunteers to help us continue to carry out the work that we do. Why not take a look at our website to see some of our volunteering opportunities and see how you can get involved?
Many of the people who volunteer with us do so through volunteering in our Charity Shop based on Wood Street.
Volunteers in our Charity Shop are able to give hands-on help to our shop supervisor, helping with displays, dealing with customers and sorting through weird and wonderful donations.
Every penny raised through the Charity Shop is used to fund our work with young people in Doncaster.
Here at YMCA Doncaster we value the time and effort that our volunteers put in to help us to continue are work, and welcome them into a supportive team. Volunteering with YMCA Doncaster gives you an opportunity to be a part of something and to learn new skills, whilst developing friendships with people you may never have met otherwise.
So, whether you are job hunting and are wanting to gain some more skills, looking for work experience or just have some time on your hands and want to try out something new, then why not contact us. We would love to hear from you!
You can call us on 01302 342148 if you have any questions, or call in to our Community Centre or Charity Shop, both based on Wood Street. Alternatively you can take a look at our website to find out how to apply to become a volunteer, and help us to give vulnerable young people the help that they need.
