Shaun Fisher, handyman

I’ve previously worked in a person-centred role for people with autism, and my two brothers were severely disabled, so I have a lot of empathy for people less fortunate than me.

Shaun joined YMCA Doncaster in April 2024 as Handyman.

Born and bred in Barnsley, Shaun lived there for most of his life, apart from five years spent travelling the world with the Army; during this time, he lived in Germany, Canada and Bosnia. He has always been passionate about sport and boxed as an amateur for eight years.

Shaun’s working life began with service in the Army before a long career in construction, specialising in joinery. From his early 40s onwards, he moved into maintenance and caretaking roles, including working in a school, before joining YMCA Doncaster.

When asked what drew him to working for a charity, Shaun said: “I’ve previously worked in a person-centred role for people with autism, and my two brothers were severely disabled, so I have a lot of empathy for people less fortunate than me. This role appealed to me because I like to help others.

Outside of work, Shaun enjoys spending time with his son and socialising with friends. He is an enthusiastic runner and can often be found out in the Peak District, Lake District or North Yorkshire Moors. He also enjoys cooking, DIY projects, and is a landlord.

A fun fact about Shaun is that he used to be a milkman, delivering to primary schools across Doncaster in the mid-to-late 1990s.
