For many families in Doncaster, finding activities that are both enriching and affordable can be a challenge. That’s why our Activities Programme has become such an essential resource, offering children the chance to explore, create, and grow in a safe and supportive environment.
We recently spoke with Shelley, whose children, Esme and Elijah (pictured above), have been part of our sessions from the very start. She shared how the programme has positively transformed their confidence and creativity. Her son, Elijah, who has a diagnosis of dyslexia, has particularly flourished through the creative activities we offer, finding new ways to express himself and celebrate his achievements.
“He’s a lot more confident,” Shelley began, “coming here has really helped his confidence, particularly with things like stop-motion animation and art. He’s not a kid that finds academics easy, but when he can create and make things, he feels a real sense of achievement.”
It’s not just about instant gratification, either. Our programme balances quick creative wins with longer-term projects that children can see come to life over time.
“Esme was really proud when some of her artwork was displayed in the charity shop. It’s things like that, showcasing their projects, that give the kids a real sense of pride.”
The benefits extend beyond the children themselves. For parents, the programme offers peace of mind and tangible support: “It’s funded, which helps financially… but also, I know they’re safe here, and that the activities are high quality. It’s holistic and engaging, not just kids sitting in a room doing colouring.”
Shelley also highlighted the importance of continuing this programme in Doncaster: “There are many families who physically can’t afford to fund sessions for their children. Having this central, well-organised programme makes a huge difference.”
One of the most powerful impacts she witnesses is her children’s newfound confidence and enthusiasm for sharing their work: “Elijah wants to take the things he makes here to school… it’s huge for him. I always tell people about the programme because it’s really good quality and the kids get to do things they wouldn’t have done before.”
At the heart of our Activities Programme is the belief that every child deserves opportunities to explore, create, and thrive, no matter their background. Stories like Esme and Elijah’s remind us why these sessions matter so much. By fostering creativity, confidence, and a love of learning, we’re helping children in Doncaster not just grow, but shine.
